THE RESPONSIBLE TRADER (TRT) @ 69 – LIFE UNDER COVID 19
LIFE UNDER COVID 19
As I celebrate my 69th birthday today, I would like to crystallize my thoughts and put on record what we have experienced for the past 9 months.
The year 2020 started with a BANG – both literally and figuratively bill from IRS. The year started with the eruption of the Taal Volcano and the first month of the year greeted us with an Ash Fall. Like the Sword of Damocles, we were all waiting for the worst – the 4th and final eruption but for some reason it did not happen.
When we thought the worst was over we were hit by something worst than we expected. On January 30, 2020 the Department of Health reported the first case of COVID 19 with a a 38-year old female Chinese National. As of this writing, the Philippines has a total of 276, 526 cases, with the Philippines on the No. 8 list among Asian countries.
The pandemic caused several instances of lockdowns in the Philippines with towns and cities being placed under ECQ (Enhanced Community Quarantine), ), MECQ (Modified Enhanced Community Quarantine) GCQ (General Community Quarantine) and MGCQ (Modified General Community Quarantine). The guidelines have been numerous and for me – being a senior citizen, the only thing I have to remembers is I am not allowed to leave my home.

The pandemic has brought both positive and negative effects. Let us take a look at the positives first.
- Nature seems to have taken the opportunity to heal itself as shown in this picture of Metro Manila taken before and after.
2.Discipline among people has been restored as shown in this picture taken at an MRT Station.
3. Change in lifestyle to better Hygienic practices.

4. Work from Home Becoming Mainstream. I now work in the privacy of my own bedroom, write books and trade as well.
Now let us look at the negatives.
- Some industries, particularly in the leisure and entertainment plus travel are badly affected.

2. Treatment in Hospitals for Some Who Can Afford.
3. Treatment In Tents for Many.
4. The Biggest Loser is the Church. The Church is considered by the Government as Non-essential and would be among the last institution to be opened.
As far I can remember, the last time we were able to personally attend mass was during the baptism of my twin granddaughters one week before the Emergency Quarantine was announced.
COPING WITH COVID 19
I am very fond of acronyms. You will find a lot of them in my books. For the ways of coping I use the acronym P-R-A-Y.
- PRAY. Of course, the first thing we have to do is pray. Prayer is our bridge to God and his awesome powers and it is through prayers that we receive all his blessings and graces.
COVID 19, does not care what religious denomination you belong to so pray to whoever is your Supreme Being that you be spared from the deadly consequences brought about by COVID 19.
- RIGHT THINKING. I always emphasize right thinking from positive thinking. Right thinking means being realistic about the situation – expecting the best but being prepared for the worst. Positive thinking lulls you into a false sense of security always looking forward to a favorable outcome.
Right thinking enables you to make an accurate assessment of the situation and make the right decisions.
- ADAPT. We are all familiar with IQ – Intelligence Quotient and for many years it held top spot in judging likelihood for our career success. The things started to shift when the idea of EQ – Emotional Intelligence was introduced with more weight being given to emotional capacity or the ability to develop strong relationships with people. Now things are shifting again to another measure – the Adversity Quotient referring to a person’s resilience or the ability to adapt well in the face of adversity.
I am sure that when this pandemic is over, there will be plenty of opportunities that will become available. For the time being we need to adapt in order to survive.
- YIELD. We Filipinos have been likened to a bamboo that swings and sways whenever it is confronted by a storm. I think this is the secret of our resiliency. We are able to bend and then bounce back stronger from every challenge or difficulty that we encounter.
Compared to other countries, most of us have consistently observed the health protocols – washing of hands, wearing face masks and face shields and social distancing.
We usually celebrate my birthday with the whole family going together to dine out. This time we have to yield and observe social distancing. We will still have our simple celebration thru a ZOOM-eating. Same food will be sent to all family members and we will eat together through ZOOM at the same time. It is good we have this new technology to still allow us to gather for important family occasions from time-to-time.
Let me end this article by my birthday wish for this year: I wish that this pandemic would soon end so we could go back to our normal lives again.
Have a blessed weekend everyone.
